Biography:
Melanie Janine Brown MBE, commonly known as Mel B or Melanie B, was born on May 29, 1975, in Hyde Park, Leeds. She grew up in the Kirkstall area of the city, the daughter of Andrea and Martin Brown. Her father is from Saint Kitts and Nevis, while her mother is British. Brown studied performing arts at Intake High School in Bramley, Leeds before embarking on her journey in the entertainment industry.
In the 1990s, Mel B rose to prominence as a member of the iconic girl group Spice Girls, where she was affectionately nicknamed Scary Spice. Alongside her bandmates Mel C, Geri Halliwell, Victoria Adams (now Beckham), and Emma Bunton, the Spice Girls became a global sensation. Their debut single, Wannabe, was an instant hit and catapulted them to fame. With over 100 million records sold worldwide, the Spice Girls became the best-selling female group of all time.
After the Spice Girls, Mel B embarked on a successful solo career. In 1998, she released her debut solo single, I Want You Back, which reached number one on the UK Singles Chart. She followed up with her debut solo album, Hot, in 2000. The album spawned the hit singles Tell Me and Feels So Good, both of which reached the top 5 on the UK charts. In 2005, Mel B released her second solo album, L.A. State of Mind, which featured the single Today.
In addition to her music career, Mel B has also made a name for herself as a television personality and actress. She first gained recognition as a contestant on the fifth season of the American dance competition series, Dancing with the Stars, in 2007. She finished in second place alongside her professional partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy. From 2011 to 2016, Mel B served as a guest and main judge on the Australian and British versions of The X Factor. She also co-presented the Australian version of Dancing with the Stars for one season in 2012.
Mel B’s television career continued to flourish as she joined the judging panel of the NBC reality show America’s Got Talent from 2013 to 2018. She shared her expertise and talent as a coach and mentor on The Voice Kids Australia in 2014, and later served as a judge on The Masked Singer Australia and Mask Singer Spain in 2022. In 2016, she co-presented Lip Sync Battle UK alongside rapper Professor Green. Additionally, Mel B took on the role of judge on Queen of the Universe in 2023.
Throughout her career, Mel B has consistently showcased her versatility and talent. From her dynamic performances as a member of the Spice Girls to her successful solo endeavors and her captivating presence on television, she has secured her place as a beloved and influential figure in the entertainment industry.
