Biography:
Megan Leanne Marcks (née Still), OAM (born 19 October 1972) is an Australian former national, Olympic, and world champion rower. She is known for her remarkable achievements in the coxless pair event and has made a significant impact on the sport of rowing. Marcks represented Australia at the Olympic Games in 1992 and 1996, leaving an indelible mark on the international stage.
Born in Queanbeyan, New South Wales in 1972, Megan Marcks was a talented athlete since her early years. In 1988, she was selected by the Australian Institute of Sport based on her physique and aerobic capacity, despite having no prior involvement in the sport of rowing. This recognition marked the beginning of her extraordinary journey in rowing.
Marcks made her debut at the national level in rowing in 1990, competing in the women’s U19 coxless four title at the Australian Rowing Championships. With great determination and skill, she secured her first national championship titles in 1991, in conjunction with Kate Slatter, in events such as the open women’s coxless four and the women’s eight, representing AIS crews while wearing the colors of Canberra Rowing Club.
The talented rower also showcased her prowess at the state level, representing New South Wales. In 1993, she was selected in the state women’s coxless four for the ULVA Trophy at the Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships. Marcks continued to race in New South Wales women’s coxless fours in 1994 and 1995, even stroking the crew in 1994. Additionally, she had the honor of stroking an ACT crew in 1996, selected to compete for the ULVA Trophy.
Marcks’ remarkable talent and dedication were recognized early on in her career when she earned her first Australian representative selection at the age of eighteen. In 1990, she was selected in the women’s junior eight to compete at the Junior World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette, France. Her team achieved an impressive fourth-place finish.
Continuing to excel in the sport, in 1991, Marcks was promoted to the Australian senior women’s squad and selected for the women’s coxless four at the World Rowing Championships in Vienna. Accompanied by Jodie Dobson, Emmy Snook, and Kate Slatter, the crew also competed in the Australian women’s eight. The coxless four persevered and earned their spot at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics after defeating France in a qualification regatta. Despite Marcks suffering a stress fracture of the rib during the Olympic lead-up, the team garnered a respectable sixth-place finish in the coxless four final, showcasing their talent and determination.
With changes to the roster, Marcks and Slatter persisted as teammates, competing together in the coxless four event at the 1993 World Rowing Championships in Racice. Though they finished last in their race, their presence in the international rowing scene further solidified their status as exceptional rowers.
