Mayumi Aoki (青木 まゆみ, Aoki Mayumi) was born on May 1, 1953, in Japan. She is a renowned Japanese swimmer, known for her exceptional achievements in the sport. Aoki’s career reached its peak during the 1972 Summer Olympics, where she made an indelible mark on women’s swimming history.
At the young age of 19, Aoki emerged as a trailblazer and made history by becoming Japan’s first female Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer in 40 years. She achieved this milestone when she won the 100m butterfly event at the Munich Games on September 1, 1972. Aoki’s victory not only broke Japan’s long-standing drought in women’s swimming gold medals but also solidified her place in the annals of swimming history.
