María Isabel Urrutia Ocoró, born on March 25, 1965, in Colombia, is a former weightlifter, athlete, and politician. She is best known for winning the first-ever gold medal for Colombia at the Summer Olympic Games, making her a significant figure in the history of Colombian sports.
From an early age, Urrutia displayed a remarkable talent for athletics. Initially, she competed in shot put and discus throw events and represented her country in the 1988 Summer Olympics. However, it was in weightlifting that Urrutia truly found her calling. In 1989, she made the decision to switch disciplines and focus on weightlifting.
Urrutia’s dedication and hard work paid off quickly. In the same year she switched to weightlifting, she won a silver medal at the 1989 World Championships, showcasing her incredible potential in the sport.
