Margrethe II (Danish: [mɑˈkʁeːˀtə]; Margrethe Alexandrine Þórhildur Ingrid, born 16 April 1940) is Queen of Denmark. As Europe’s longest-serving current head of state and the world’s longest-serving current female head of state, she has reigned as Denmark’s monarch for over 50 years. Margrethe, born into the House of Glücksburg, a cadet branch of the House of Oldenburg, is the eldest child of King Frederick IX and Queen Ingrid. Her ascension to the throne in 1972 marked the first time a woman became the monarch of Denmark since Margrethe I, who ruled the Scandinavian kingdoms during the Kalmar Union in the 14th century.
Margrethe’s interest in archaeology is well-known, and she has actively participated in several excavations. Together with her grandfather Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden, she spent time unearthing artifacts near Etruria in 1962. Margrethe’s archaeological passion has led her to participate in excavations in Italy, Egypt, Denmark, and South America. Her contribution to the field has not only enriched Denmark’s cultural heritage but has also highlighted her dedication to preserving history.
Throughout her reign, Margrethe has been actively involved in state affairs and has undertaken numerous foreign state visits. As of 2023, she has received 42 official state visits as sovereign and has personally undertaken 55 foreign state visits. Support for the monarchy in Denmark has remained consistently high, with around 82% of the population favoring the institution.
