Loretta Doyle (also known by her married name Cusack) was born on July 12, 1963, in Scotland. She is a Scottish judoka who made a significant impact in the world of judo. Known for her prowess and skill, Doyle has won numerous titles and championships throughout her career.
Doyle first discovered her passion for judo at the tender age of 10. Recognizing her potential, she joined the British Judo team just three years later, marking the beginning of her journey in the sport.
In 1980, Doyle competed at the inaugural World Judo Championships for women. Despite being one of only seven judoka at the event, she demonstrated her talent by clinching a bronze medal. She continued to excel, securing third place at the 1980 European Judo Championships, and second place in the 1981 and 1982 European Judo Championships.
1982 was a particularly memorable year for Doyle as she emerged victorious in the under-52 kg category at the World Judo Championships, cementing her status as a formidable competitor. The following year, she added another accomplishment to her name by winning the under-52 kg event at the European Judo Championships in Genoa, Italy.
However, Doyle’s journey was not without struggles. In 1984, she had to bear the financial burden of competing at the World Judo Championships, even borrowing money from her father to cover the expenses. Despite facing adversity, Doyle showcased unwavering determination. Unfortunately, she suffered a separated shoulder during the Championships and had to seek medical attention.
In 1986, Doyle faced disappointment when she lost the British Open Championships final, resulting in her exclusion from the 1986 World Judo Championships. Nonetheless, she displayed resilience by securing third place at the European Judo Championships held in London that same year.
Doyle’s determination paid off in 1990 when she emerged triumphant in the under-56 kg category at the Commonwealth Games, defeating Australian judoka Suzanne Williams. This victory not only earned her a gold medal but also marked Scotland’s first judo medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Despite her achievements, Doyle was not chosen to compete in the 1992 Summer Olympics. However, she continued to make a significant impact in her sport. Throughout her career, she won eight British titles at the British Judo Championships, further highlighting her dominance in the field.
Following her retirement, Doyle transitioned to coaching, working as a coach for the British Judo Association. In this role, she mentored and guided judo athletes, including Sally Conway, nurturing their talent and supporting their journeys.
In 2019, Doyle established the Loretta Doyle Judo Foundation, which aimed to provide financial assistance to young judo enthusiasts. Through this foundation, she hoped to support the next generation of talented judokas and contribute to the growth of the sport she loved.
