Biography:
Lisa Brown (born January 17, 1971 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago) is a Trinidadian boxer. During her career, from which she retired, she held the WIBA, WBA, IFBA, and WIBC super bantamweight titles, and the IWBF bantamweight title.
Early Life:
Lisa Brown was born on January 17, 1971, in the city of Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago. She grew up in a family of four, being the only girl. Brown developed an early interest in cricket, a popular sport in Trinidad. However, when she immigrated to Canada at the age of 17, she discovered that cricket wasn’t as recognized there.
Marriage and Discovery of Boxing:
Lisa Brown married professional boxer Errol Brown, who also became her trainer. Initially hesitant, it was Errol who discovered Lisa’s talent and encouraged her to get into boxing. Lisa’s inspiration to take up the sport came after witnessing the fight between Christy Martin and Deirdre Gogarty in 1996.
Amateur Career:
At the age of 26, Lisa Brown began her amateur boxing career in 1997. She went on to compete in 32 fights, winning 26 of them. Her first amateur fight resulted in a knockout victory. Throughout her amateur career, she also faced off against members of the Canadian national team. Brown participated in the Canadian National Championships in 1998 and 1999, winning a silver medal in the finals against Patricia Picotin in 1998. The following year, she claimed the Canadian National Championships title by walkover.
Professional Career:
Brown made her professional boxing debut on May 5, 2000, against Leilani Salazar at the Convention Center in Tucson. She secured a fourth-round TKO victory, marking the beginning of a successful career. Brown gained a reputation for defeating opponents in their hometowns, earning the nickname Bad News.
On September 1, 2001, Lisa Brown faced Leona Brown for the second time that year, this time competing for the vacant IWBF bantamweight title. The fight took place at Cedarbridge Academy in Bermuda, where Lisa won by a six-round unanimous decision.
September 23, 2005, witnessed Lisa Brown’s victory over Jackie Chavez at the Jean Pierre Sports Complex in Port of Spain. Brown secured the WIBC and WIBA junior featherweight titles with a ten-round unanimous decision, further solidifying her place in the boxing world.
Retirement:
Lisa Brown retired from professional boxing after an illustrious career. Her dedication, skill, and numerous accolades have solidified her as one of the most successful boxers of her era.
