Biography:
Layal Mounir Abboud (Arabic: , pronounced [laj’ja:l ab’bu:d] (listen)) is a Lebanese pop singer, folk music entertainer, sound-lyric poet, concert dancer, fit model, and Muslim humanitarian. She was born in the southern Lebanese Tyrian village of Kniseh and comes from a musical family. Abboud has made significant contributions to the music industry, especially in the realm of Lebanese folklore music. She is also known for her captivating stage presence and her commitment to humanitarian efforts.
Born into a large Muslim family in the village of Kanisah in Lebanon’s Tyre District, Layal Abboud showed an interest in music from a young age. She was greatly influenced by Egyptian pop singer Amr Diab and began singing and dancing as a child. Her father recognized her talent and passion and bought her a violin at the age of six. Abboud’s love for music continued to grow, and she started performing at local cafes and restaurants in Beirut.
Abboud pursued her education alongside her music career. She studied English literature at the Lebanese University and translation at the Beirut Arab University, earning a master’s degree. She also attended the Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music for two years to study music. In addition to her academic pursuits, Abboud served as an officer for the Lebanese Police Force, working in the Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport’s Inspection Department.
In 2001, Abboud made her first television appearance on the popular show Studio El-Fan, competing in its 2001-2002 season. This exposure helped boost her career, and she began performing at various venues in Beirut. She collaborated with renowned musicians Richard Najm, Tony Abi Karam, and Salim Salameh, which further expanded her network in the music industry.
Abboud’s musical talent extends beyond vocals. She is proficient in playing the oud, organ, and guitar, thanks to her studies and mentorship under Richard Najm. In 2007, she released her first album, Fi Shouq (On Longing), which received positive reviews from music critics and fans alike. Abboud’s music touches the hearts of her listeners as she combines her poetic and compositional skills with her powerful vocals.
Throughout her career, Abboud has drawn inspiration from various artists, including Ammar El Sherei, Baligh Hamdi, and Sabah. She considers Sabah as the ideal of my art career. Abboud’s unique style has earned her recognition not only in Lebanon but also internationally. In an interview, she confessed her admiration for French musicians, citing her inclination towards romantic melodies.
In addition to her contributions to the music industry, Layal Abboud is also a poet and composer. Her ability to combine different artistic elements, such as music, poetry, and dance, showcases her versatility as an artist.
