Biography:
Guadalupe Ramona Olvera, better known by her ring name La Amapola, is a Mexican professional wrestler. Born on December 1981, she has made a name for herself in the Mexican professional wrestling promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) throughout her entire career. With her distinctive ring name, which means The Poppy in Spanish, La Amapola has captivated audiences with her skill, strength, and charisma.
La Amapola began her wrestling journey in December 1997 after receiving training from renowned wrestlers such as Super Muñeco, Satánico, and Adonis Salazar—whom she would later marry. Adopting the masked persona of La Amapola, she made her professional debut in the ring. Thus began her illustrious career in the world of Lucha Libre.
During the late 1990s and early 2000s, CMLL did not place much emphasis on their women’s division, leading La Amapola to pursue opportunities in various other minor Mexican wrestling promotions. Although she was offered a contract by AAA, CMLL’s main rival, La Amapola chose to remain with CMLL in hopes that the promotion would prioritize women’s wrestling, just as they had done in the mid to early 1990s.
In 2005, CMLL started showcasing women’s wrestling more prominently, shining a spotlight on talented young wrestlers like La Amapola and Dark Angel. The intense storyline feud between La Amapola and Dark Angel caught the attention of fans, elevating the profile of the women’s division within CMLL.
One of the defining moments of La Amapola’s career came on April 14, 2006, when she faced Dark Angel in a Luchas de Apuesta, a high-stakes bet match. Unfortunately, La Amapola was defeated, resulting in her unmasking and revealing her true identity to the world. However, this loss did not dampen her spirit or her determination to succeed.
In addition to her accomplishments in CMLL, La Amapola also made appearances for other Mexican promotions, including the International Wrestling Revolution Group (IWRG). It was during her time at IWRG that she began wearing the prestigious IWRG Intercontinental Women’s Championship belt, signifying her dominance in the division. While the details of her championship victory remain unclear, as the previous champion had not wrestled in Mexico for years, La Amapola’s reign as the IWRG Women’s Champion brought her further recognition as one of the top female wrestlers in the country.
As her career progressed, La Amapola’s influence on women’s wrestling continued to grow. She inspired countless aspiring female wrestlers, breaking down barriers and proving that women could excel in a male-dominated industry. Her dedication and passion for the sport paved the way for future generations of women in Lucha Libre.
Today, La Amapola’s legacy as a formidable wrestler and a trailblazer for women’s wrestling lives on. Her impressive record includes being the longest reigning CMLL World Women’s Champion, holding the title for an astounding 1,442 days. Throughout her career, she faced numerous challenges, but her resilience and determination propelled her to success.
La Amapola’s contributions to women’s wrestling and her impact on Mexican professional wrestling as a whole have cemented her status as a legendary figure in the sport. Her story serves as an inspiration to aspiring young wrestlers, reminding them of the power they possess to overcome obstacles and achieve greatness.
