Judith van Berkel-de Nijs, born Judith de Nijs on 22 April 1942 in Hilversum, is a Dutch swimmer who has made a lasting impact on the world of swimming. She is renowned for her achievements in marathon swimming and her impressive record as world No. 1 in the sport during the 1960s and 1970s. For her contributions to the sport, she was honored with induction into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.
From a young age, Judith showed promise as a swimmer. Alongside her elder sister Lenie, she trained under the guidance of renowned Dutch coach Jan Stender. Both sisters quickly became record-breaking swimmers, with Judith initially specializing in the 400 m medley event. In 1961, she set a European record in the 400 m medley, a testament to her exceptional talent and dedication.
However, Judith’s true passion and skill lay in marathon swimming. In 1962, she shifted her focus to longer distances and became the national champion in the 1500 m freestyle. This transition marked the beginning of a successful career in marathon swimming, where she would go on to achieve remarkable feats.
Competing in marathon swimming allowed Judith to become a professional swimmer, earning prize money for the races she won. From 1964 to 1968 and again in 1970, she held the prestigious title of world No. 1 in marathon swimming. Her consistent ranking at the top of the sport showcased her incredible endurance, determination, and ability to push boundaries.
In 1969, Judith joined the ranks of accomplished Dutch swimmers by becoming the second woman from the Netherlands to swim across the English Channel, following in the footsteps of Mary Kok. This accomplishment further solidified her status as a trailblazer and role model in the world of swimming.
Outside of her athletic pursuits, Judith married water polo player Bob van Berkel on 17 January 1968, subsequently changing her name to Judith van Berkel-de Nijs. The couple has two children, including water polo player Robert van Berkel. Despite her family commitments, Judith remained a competitive swimmer well into the 2000s, winning national titles in senior categories from 1988 to 2001, 2005, 2007, and 2009.
