Jane Simpson is a pioneering engineer and influential figure in the field of transportation infrastructure. As the Head of Asset Creation at Severn Trent Water and the former Chief Engineer at Network Rail, Simpson has consistently shattered glass ceilings and pushed the boundaries of what women can achieve in male-dominated industries.
Simpson’s interest in engineering began during her childhood in Coventry. In the 1980s, she experienced a pivotal moment when she successfully made a light bulb work on the WISE Campaign bus. This inspired her to pursue a career in engineering, despite being discouraged and advised to consider alternative paths such as teaching or being a nursery nurse. Throughout her life, Simpson has been a dedicated member of the Scouts, earning her Baden-Powell Award as a Guide and her Queen’s Scout Award as a Venture Scout.
After leaving school at 16, Simpson embarked on an apprenticeship at General Electric. Her commitment and aptitude led to sponsorship for a degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering at Coventry University. She later completed a master’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Birmingham, further honing her expertise in the field.
Simpson’s professional journey began in 1996 when she joined British Rail as a graduate, coinciding with the company’s privatization. Working in one of the maintenance companies for infrastructure, she quickly rose through the ranks and became the Overhead Line Engineer in 1998. This pivotal role saw her leading the Overhead line between Euston and Rugby, making her the first woman to hold this position. Despite facing gender bias and challenges in a male-dominated industry, Simpson remained focused and determined to succeed.
Throughout her career, Simpson displayed exceptional leadership skills and exemplified innovation in engineering. After working for Marconi Communications, she returned to Network Rail in 2004. In 2009, she joined the Infrastructure Maintenance Department and rose to the position of Director of Route Asset Management of the London and North Western Railway in 2011. In this role, she played a crucial part in the electrification of train lines in the North of England.
Simpson’s expertise and dedication did not go unnoticed. In 2014, she became a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, cementing her status as a respected figure in the field. Her remarkable leadership and accomplishments led to her appointment as Chief Engineer in 2015. In this capacity, she oversaw £600 million worth of projects and ensured that resources were allocated effectively to enhance the UK’s rail infrastructure. Notably, Simpson championed the infusion of innovation in engineering, introducing mechatronics and small track-side robots that provided intelligent inspection capabilities. She also led a groundbreaking project to digitize information systems at Network Rail.
Simpson’s contributions to the field of engineering have been widely recognized and celebrated. In 2016, she was named one of the UK’s Top 50 Influential Women in Engineering and was chosen as one of the 20 Most Inspirational Women in Rail. Her expertise and commitment to driving change led to her appointment as Head of Asset Creation at Severn Trent in 2016. In this role, she is responsible for all above ground infrastructure, ensuring the cleanliness of water, proper treatment of wastewater, and exploration of renewable energy sources.
Beyond her professional achievements, Simpson is a passionate advocate for diversity in engineering. At Network Rail, she spearheaded initiatives such as work experience programs and open evenings to attract more girls into the profession. Her tireless efforts to promote inclusivity and inspire future generations of engineers have made a significant impact on the industry. Simpson’s dedication to championing diversity further extends to her role as a trustee of The Scout Association.
In recognition of her outstanding contributions, Simpson was listed in the Top 100 Women to Watch in the 2017 FTSE Board Report. Her exceptional career trajectory and unwavering commitment to engineering have solidified her place as a trailblazer and role model for aspiring female engineers.
