Biography:
Irene Margreta Maria de Kok was born on August 29, 1963, in Eindhoven, Netherlands. She is a retired Judoka who made a significant impact on the sport during her career. Known for her exceptional talent and determination, De Kok became one of the most successful judo athletes of her time.
De Kok’s journey in judo began at a young age, as she pursued her passion for the sport. Her talent quickly became evident, and she started making waves in the judo community. In 1984, she won a silver medal in the 66 kilograms category at the World Championships held in Vienna, Austria.
However, it was in the following years that De Kok truly established herself as a force to be reckoned with. In 1986 and 1987, she clinched two consecutive world championships in the 72 kilograms category. Her exceptional performances on the mat earned her widespread recognition and made her a role model for aspiring judokas around the world.
In 1987, after winning her second world title, De Kok was named Sportswoman of the Year in the Netherlands. This prestigious accolade was a testament to her remarkable achievements and the impact she had on the sport. De Kok’s list of honors also includes three European titles and three European Championship bronze medals.
De Kok had the opportunity to represent her country at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992. Competing in the 72 kilograms category, she showcased her skill and determination, ultimately winning a bronze medal. In 1996, along with her colleagues Monique van der Lee and Anita Staps, she filed a complaint against their coach, Peter Ooms, for alleged sexual harassment. The disciplinary committee of the Judo Bond Nederland suspended Ooms for three years, highlighting the importance of addressing such issues within the sporting community.
After retiring from competitive judo, De Kok embarked on a new adventure. In February 2009, she opened her own café on the Heuvelring in Tilburg, where she continues to contribute to her community.
