Inese Jaunzeme was a Latvian javelin thrower born on May 21, 1932. She became one of the most prominent female athletes of her time and left a lasting impact on the sport.
Jaunzeme’s athletic journey began in her early years when she showed a natural talent and passion for sports. She excelled in various disciplines and soon developed a particular interest in javelin throwing. With dedication and hard work, she quickly rose through the ranks and became a force to be reckoned with in the field of athletics.
In 1952, Jaunzeme claimed her first victory as the Latvian champion in javelin throwing. This achievement marked the beginning of a successful career that would span over a decade. In 1956, Jaunzeme experienced a breakthrough that would forever place her name in the history books. She competed at the Soviet Union Championships, finishing third and securing a spot on the Soviet Olympic team for the 1956 Olympics held in Melbourne, Australia. It was at this prestigious event that she showcased her exceptional skills and set a new Olympic record in the first round of the javelin throw. Undeterred by the pressure, she further improved her mark twice, ultimately achieving a winning throw of 53.86 meters. This victory not only earned her the gold medal but also made her the first Latvian Olympic champion.

In 1960, Jaunzeme decided to retire from competitive athletics to pursue a career in medicine. She graduated from the Riga Medical Institute and specialized in the fields of traumatology and plastic surgery. Her dedication to education and research was evident in 1969 when she defended her PhD thesis, furthering her contribution to the field of medicine.
Her passion for sports, however, never diminished. From 1999 until her passing in 2011, Inese Jaunzeme served as the head of the Latvian Olympians Association, dedicating her time and energy to support fellow athletes and promote the Olympic spirit.
