Biography:
Hiyori Kon (Japanese: 今 日和) is a Japanese amateur sumo wrestler who has made significant contributions towards advocating for equal rights for women to compete professionally in Japan. Born in Ajigasawa, Aomori in August 1997, Kon developed an interest in wrestling at a young age, inspired by her siblings’ involvement in the sport. She began competing against boys and quickly established herself as a formidable presence on the wrestling mat.
Kon’s passion for sumo wrestling only grew stronger as she entered university. At Ritsumeikan University, where she studied gender theory, Kon became the third woman to join the sumo club. Her inclusion in the male-dominated world of sumo was itself groundbreaking and inspiring.
For Kon, sumo wrestling is not merely a sport but a form of expression. With her incredible skill and dedication, she strives to challenge societal norms and break down gender barriers. In Japan, sumo is practiced professionally and governed by the Japan Sumo Association (JSA). However, due to ancient Shinto and Buddhist beliefs, women are traditionally restricted from entering or touching the sumo ring (dohyō) as they are considered impure. The JSA has staunchly upheld this tradition throughout the centuries, viewing any potential change as a dishonor to their ancestors.
Despite these limitations, Kon has actively participated in several amateur sumo competitions in Japan and across the world. In 2014 and 2015, she won the heavyweight division of the Women Junior World Sumo Championships, showcasing her exceptional talent and determination. Kon also represented Japan in the Sumo World Championships in both 2018 and 2019, earning silver medals on both occasions.
Kon’s inspiring journey and her relentless fight for gender equality in the world of sumo were brought to light in the 2019 Netflix documentary Little Miss Sumo directed by Matt Kay. The film follows Kon’s quest to compete in the 2018 championship, providing a powerful glimpse into her life and struggles.
After graduating from university, Kon joined the sumo works team sponsored by Aisin Seiki, becoming its first female member. Her inclusion in a professional sumo team marked a significant milestone for women in the sport and further cemented her status as a trailblazer.
In 2022, Kon achieved another remarkable accomplishment by winning a silver medal in the women’s openweight division at the World Games. Her consistent success on the international stage serves as a testament to her unwavering dedication and exceptional talent.
Throughout her career, Hiyori Kon has been recognized as a true pioneer for women in sumo wrestling. Her advocacy work and incredible achievements have earned her a well-deserved place on the BBC’s list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world for 2019. Kon’s courage and determination continue to inspire generations of female athletes to strive for equality and break down barriers in the realm of sports.
