Lee Kyung-eun, better known by her stage name Harisu, is a South Korean pop singer, model, and actress. Born male on February 17, 1975, Harisu knew from early childhood that she wanted to present herself as a woman. As a child, she was drawn to feminine toys and activities, giving hints of her true identity. Despite societal expectations, Harisu remained steadfast in her desire to live as a woman.
In the 1990s, Harisu underwent sex reassignment surgery, becoming the Republic of Korea’s second transgender entertainer. She also became the second person in Korea to legally change their gender, marking a significant step forward in transgender rights and recognition in the country. Her stage name, Harisu, is a clever adaptation of the English phrase hot issue, which perfectly encapsulates her role as a trailblazer and a topic of interest.
Harisu’s career truly took off in 2001 when she gained public attention through a television commercial for DoDo cosmetics.
