Guo Yue (simplified Chinese: 郭跃; traditional Chinese: 郭躍; pinyin: Guō Yuè) is a Chinese table tennis player and the 2007 women’s world champion. She was born on July 17, 1988, in Anshan, Liaoning province.
Guo Yue was a left-handed shakehand attack player and hails from Liaoning, China, the same province as other left-handed players Wang Nan, Chang Chenchen, and Li Jia. Known for her attacking style, she was considered a potential leading player in the Chinese women’s team. In her early career, her partner in women’s doubles was Niu Jianfeng from Hebei. Later, she teamed up with Li Xiaoxia, who was also her roommate.
Throughout her career, Guo Yue faced both successes and challenges. In 2006, she experienced a series of losses in international games, which led to her disappearance from the public eye for almost half a year. It was officially claimed that this break was to help her mentally readjust. However, she made a strong comeback at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, where she won first place in women’s singles, women’s doubles, and women’s team events.
The highlight of Guo Yue’s career came in 2007 when she participated in the World Table Tennis Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. Not only that, she also won the mixed doubles title with Wang Liqin, further solidifying her position as one of the top players in the world.
However, Guo Yue’s career also faced controversy and struggles. In 2010, she was cited for poor behavior and a lack of interest in playing table tennis. One incident mentioned on a Chinese forum claimed that she had failed to attend a meeting, leading to friction with China’s top player Wang Nan. Following the London 2012 Olympics, she was transferred to a provincial team. Then, in 2015, due to her poor behavior and lack of commitment, Guo Yue was expelled from the National Team. She subsequently shifted her focus to academics and began studying finance at Tsinghua University.
Despite the challenges she faced towards the latter part of her career, Guo Yue’s achievements remain noteworthy. She won numerous titles and accolades throughout her career, including being the women’s singles champion at the 2007 World Championships.
