Biography:
Françoise David CQ (born January 13, 1948) is a former spokesperson of Québec solidaire – a left-wing, feminist, and sovereigntist political party in the province of Quebec, Canada. She was elected to serve as the Member of the National Assembly of Quebec for the riding of Gouin in the 2012 Quebec election and then again in the 2014 Quebec election. Quebec Solidaire was born from the merger of Option Citoyenne with l’Union des Forces Progressistes.
David’s activism and dedication to social justice began early in her career. In 1987, she became the coordinator for the Regroupement des centres de femmes du Québec, where she worked tirelessly to address women’s issues and advocate for their rights. Seven years later, she was named president of the Fédération des femmes du Québec (FFQ), a position that allowed her to further amplify the voices of women and ensure that their concerns, including poverty and violence against women, remained at the forefront of Canadian politics.
David’s work extended beyond the borders of Canada. In 1999, she was made a Knight of the National Order of Quebec in recognition of her significant contributions to the province. Two years later, she was awarded the Governor General’s Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case, honoring her role in advancing women’s rights and gender equality.
Two of David’s most notable achievements were the 1995 Women’s March against Poverty and the 2000 World March of Women against Poverty and Violence. These events brought together women from diverse backgrounds and emphasized the need for systemic change to address the issues of poverty and violence that disproportionately affect women. Her ability to mobilize people and unite them in the pursuit of social justice is a testament to her leadership skills and dedication to advancing the rights and well-being of women.
Beyond her activism, David also contributed to the academic and intellectual discourse surrounding political and social issues. She authored the book/manifesto Bien commun recherché – une option citoyenne, which combines the concepts of common good, social justice, ecology, and economic democracy into a coherent political doctrine. With over 7,000 copies sold in Quebec, the book has resonated with many who seek a more equitable and sustainable society.
David’s political career reached new heights when she was elected as the Member of the National Assembly of Quebec for the riding of Gouin in the 2012 Quebec election. Her victory marked a significant milestone for Québec solidaire, as it signaled growing support for the party’s progressive and feminist agenda. She was re-elected in the 2014 Quebec election, further solidifying her role as a prominent and influential political figure in Quebec.
Despite her achievements, David faced challenges, both personal and political. On January 19, 2017, she announced her immediate retirement as both party spokesperson and as a Member of the National Assembly due to her health. This decision, while undoubtedly difficult, highlights David’s commitment to prioritizing her well-being and serves as a reminder of the importance of self-care in the pursuit of social and political change.
Françoise David’s impact on society extends far beyond her political career. Her dedication to advocating for women’s rights, her ability to mobilize people and bring attention to important issues, and her intellectual contributions have left an indelible mark on Quebec’s political landscape. Her legacy serves as an inspiration to future generations of activists and leaders, reminding them of the power of collective action and the importance of striving for social justice and equality.
