Biography:
Eugénie Anne Claudine Le Sommer was born on 18 May 1989 in France. She is a highly accomplished professional footballer, known for her exceptional skills as a forward. Le Sommer currently plays for both French club Lyon and the France national team.
Le Sommer is widely regarded as one of the most decorated players in modern women’s club football. Her remarkable goal-scoring abilities have secured numerous victories for her team, and she has been an integral part of Lyon’s success. In fact, Le Sommer holds the record for scoring the most goals for France, surpassing players of all genders.
Born into a family of seven children, Le Sommer was raised with a love for the game. Her father, Thierry, worked as a policeman before retiring, while her mother had also played football in her youth. Le Sommer’s passion for the sport was evident from a young age, as she began playing football at the tender age of five. She joined the women’s section of Trélissac FC, marking the beginning of her football journey.
As Le Sommer continued to develop her skills, she joined AS Guermeur in the Brittany region. She then moved on to FC Lorient, one of the biggest clubs in the region, where she played in the youth section. Her talent shone through as she assisted her youth sides in winning the Coupe Fédérale 16 ans in 2005 and the Mozaïc Foot Challenge in 2006, the latter being held at the prestigious Clairefontaine academy.
Le Sommer’s prodigious talent did not go unnoticed, and she was subsequently selected to attend CNFE Clairefontaine, a women’s section of the Clairefontaine academy. After a brief stint there, she joined D1 Féminine club Stade Briochin. In her debut season with Saint-Brieuc, Le Sommer showcased her skills in all 22 league matches, scoring four goals. The 2008–09 season saw her reaching new heights, as she netted 10 goals in 22 matches. Her exceptional performance earned her a nomination for the UNFP Female Player of the Year, narrowly losing out to Olympique Lyonnais player Louisa Necib.
In the 2009–10 season, Le Sommer demonstrated her incredible goal-scoring prowess, starting off with a bang by scoring ten goals in her first seven league matches, including a hat trick against Toulouse in a thrilling 5–4 defeat. She finished the season as the league’s top scorer and was recognized with the UNFP Female Player of the Year award in the following season.
On 30 June 2010, it was announced that Le Sommer would be joining the four-time defending champions Olympique Lyonnais, leaving her former club Stade Briochin after an impressive three-season tenure. Her arrival at Lyon enhanced the team’s offensive capabilities and she quickly became an integral part of their success.
Le Sommer’s achievements continued to soar as she aided Lyon in winning the 2019–20 UEFA Women’s Champions League. On 30 August 2020, she scored the opening goal in their 3–1 defeat of Wolfsburg in the final, securing both her and Lyon’s seventh overall victory in the competition and their fifth consecutive win.
In addition to her club career, Le Sommer has also made significant contributions to the France national team. Her talent and dedication have earned her a spot on the national team roster, where she has represented her country in numerous international competitions.
