Erika Lopez is a renowned Marine Conservationist and Island Sanctuary Protector, known for her tireless efforts to safeguard biodiversity and protect marine ecosystems. As the Executive Director of the Biodiversity Conservation Colombia Foundation, Erika has dedicated her life to conserving and protecting the flora and fauna sanctuary of Malpelo, a truly remarkable endeavor that has had a profound impact on the world of marine conservation.
Born and raised in Colombia, Erika developed a deep passion for nature and the ocean from a young age. Inspired by her surroundings and the richness of Colombia’s biodiversity, she set out on a mission to make a difference in the conservation field. Erika’s journey began with her pursuit of a degree in Marine Biology, where she honed her knowledge and skills to better understand and protect the fragile marine ecosystems.
After completing her education, Erika embarked on a career that would allow her to put her knowledge into action. She forged partnerships with the Colombian Navy and Colombian National Parks, recognizing the importance of collaboration to achieve conservation goals. By leveraging these partnerships, Erika was able to mobilize resources and raise awareness about the critical need to preserve the biodiversity hotspot of Malpelo.
One of Erika’s most significant accomplishments is the establishment of the Tropical East Pacific Marine Corridor, connecting Malpelo to Galapagos, Cocos, and Coiba. This corridor has become renowned in the international diving world as one of the top dive sites for migratory sharks. Through her efforts, Erika has not only helped protect these iconic species but also highlighted the importance of preserving the delicate balance of marine ecosystems.
As an accomplished PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer with over 10,000 dives, Erika’s passion for diving has served as a powerful catalyst for her conservation work.
