Delphine Cascarino (born 5 February 1997) is a French professional footballer known for her exceptional skills as an Attacker (Winger) for Division 1 Féminine club Lyon and the France national team.
Cascarino began her football journey playing for her local youth teams of A.S. St. Priest and A.S. Manissieux St. Priest. In 2009, she joined Olympique Lyonnais and made her senior debut for Lyon in the Division 1 Féminine during the 2014-15 season. Her remarkable performances led to her first professional contract in 2015. However, in January 2017, her season was cut short due to a knee injury.
By 2018, Cascarino had already achieved great success, winning three UEFA Women’s Champions League titles and three Division 1 titles with Olympic Lyonnais. Unfortunately, on 25 May 2023, Olympique Lyonnais announced that she would be sidelined for several months after rupturing an anterior cruciate ligament.
On the international stage, Cascarino’s talent was recognized early on. In 2012, she was selected to play for the France women’s national under-17 football team, where she contributed to their victorious campaign in the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Her captain, Sandie Toletti, praised Cascarino, stating, It’s a great discovery, knowing that she was not part of the last European championship. She is already a great player, despite her young age.
Cascarino made her senior debut for the France national team in 2016, facing the England women’s national football team. Since then, she has been a valuable asset to the team, displaying her skills and adding to the team’s success.
Off the field, Cascarino is the twin sister of Estelle Cascarino, who is also a football player. They had the opportunity to play together at Lyon before Estelle moved to Paris FC in 2016. Despite their last name, they are not related to Tony Cascarino, although they often face questions about it. Delphine clarified, saying, I am often asked if I am from his family, that is not the case… I know that he notably played for Nancy and that he is Irish. Me, I’m not Irish at all!
Cascarino comes from a diverse background. Her father is Italian, and her mother hails from Guadeloupe. This multicultural heritage adds to the richness of her identity and influences her perspective as a player.
In summary, Delphine Cascarino has made a significant impact in the world of women’s football, both domestically and internationally. Her remarkable achievements with Olympique Lyonnais, combined with her contributions to the France national team, have solidified her position as a talented and influential player. She serves as an inspiration to aspiring footballers and has played a vital role in pushing the boundaries of women’s football.
