Daniëlle de Bruijn is a highly accomplished water polo player who has made a significant impact on the sport both nationally and internationally. Born on February 13, 1978, in Vlaardingen, Netherlands, de Bruijn has become a prominent figure in the Dutch national water polo team, representing her country in numerous prestigious competitions.
De Bruijn’s journey to success began in the late 1990s when she became part of the Dutch water polo team that achieved remarkable results. In 1997, she contributed to the team’s bronze medal win at the Women’s European Water Polo Championship held in Seville. The following year, the team secured a silver medal at the World Aquatics Championships in Perth, elevating the Netherlands’ presence in the water polo world. The success continued in 1999 as de Bruijn and her teammates clinched the gold medal at the FINA Women’s Water Polo World Cup in Winnipeg and won silver at the Women’s European Water Polo Championship in Prato.
These tremendous achievements set high expectations for the Dutch team as they entered the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, where women’s water polo made its debut. Unfortunately, they finished fourth in the tournament, falling short of a medal. Despite this setback, de Bruijn continued to make valuable contributions to her team.

They faced disappointment at the 2001 Women’s European Water Polo Championship in Budapest, where they secured fifth place. The 9th place finish at the FINA Women’s World Water Polo Championship in Fukuoka and the sixth place at the World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona further added to their struggles. The team’s failure to qualify for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens led de Bruijn to retire from her national career temporarily.
However, de Bruijn made a triumphant return to the sport at the 2007 World Aquatics Championships in Melbourne, where the Netherlands secured the 9th position. Determined to revitalize the team’s success, de Bruijn and her talented teammates embarked on a new campaign in preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Their efforts paid off as they claimed the fifth place at the Women’s European Water Polo Championship in Málaga and earned their spot in the Olympics in Kirishi.
The 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing became the pinnacle of de Bruijn’s career. In an intense final match against the United States, the Dutch team emerged victorious, winning the gold medal. De Bruijn played a key role in this historic moment, finishing as the tournament’s top goal scorer with 17 goals, including seven in the final. Her exceptional performance and leadership earned her recognition as one of Swimming World magazines’ 2008 Water Polo Players of the Year.
