Biography:
Claudia Pía Baudracco (22 October 1970 – 18 March 2012) was an Argentine activist for the rights of women, sexual minorities, and LGBT people.
Baudracco was born on 22 October 1970 in La Carlota, Córdoba Province. She spent her adolescence with her family in Venado Tuerto, before moving to Buenos Aires. From a young age, Baudracco faced discrimination and mistreatment due to her gender identity, which led her to go into exile for several years. She first sought refuge in Uruguay and later in Europe.
In 1993, Baudracco co-founded the Association of Cross-dressers of Argentina (Asociación de Travestis de Argentina) alongside María Belén Correa and other activists. During her tenure as coordinator until 1995, the organization fought for the rights of trans individuals. The association later changed its name to the Argentine Cross-dresser Transsexual Transgender Association (Asociación Travestis Transexuales Transgéneros Argentinas; ATTTA). With the support of ATTTA, Baudracco played a significant role in campaigning for the repeal of the Códigos de Faltas, which criminalized trans identities. As a result of their efforts, these codes were eventually repealed in several provinces.
Baudracco also dedicated herself to advocating for the approval of the Gender Identity Law in Argentina. This landmark legislation granted transgender individuals the right to choose their name and provided access to healthcare. In September 2005, she was a founder and member of the board of directors of the Argentine Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Trans Federation (Federación Argentina de Lesbianas, Gays, Bisexuales y Trans; FALGBT). Additionally, Baudracco collaborated with the Ministry of Health’s Directorate of AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases as a member of the Country Coordinating Mechanism of The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. Through her work, she conducted prevention and research activities to combat these diseases.
Despite her significant contributions, Claudia Pía Baudracco tragically passed away at her home in Buenos Aires on 18 March 2012. She had unfortunately gone without medical checkups for most of her life and was unable to benefit from the healthcare provisions of the Gender Identity Law, as it came into effect shortly after her death.
