Biography:
Christa Deguchi (出口 クリスタ Deguchi Christa, born 29 October 1995) is a Canadian judoka. In 2017, Deguchi made a significant decision to switch her national representation from Japan to Canada. Born in Japan, Deguchi’s father hails from Canada, which allowed her to compete for the country. Despite being approached to represent Canada in 2012, she initially declined the offer and continued to compete for Japan. However, she eventually realized that her best chance of making it to the Olympics would be by competing for Canada, consequently accepting the opportunity to represent her father’s homeland.
Deguchi’s judo career has been marked by several remarkable achievements. She participated in the 2018 World Judo Championships, where she secured a bronze medal. This historic win made Deguchi the first female judoka representing Canada to ever earn a medal at the World Judo Championships. Demonstrating her talent and determination, she continued to excel in the sport.
In 2019, Deguchi reached new heights as she clinched her first gold medal in the world championship. This astounding triumph further solidified her standing within the international judo community and bolstered her reputation as an exceptional athlete.
