Biography:
Brigitte Plateau is a French computer scientist who has made significant contributions to the field of computer science. Born in France, Plateau developed an early interest in mathematics and problem-solving. Her father, an engineer, and her mother, a teacher, provided a supportive environment that nurtured her passion for learning.
Plateau’s academic journey began when she enrolled at the prestigious École Normale Supérieure at Fontenay-aux-Roses, where she majored in Mathematics with a focus on Probability Theory. It was during her time at the École Normale Supérieure that Plateau realized her aptitude for computer science and decided to pursue it further.
After completing her studies at the École Normale Supérieure, Plateau went on to earn her Doctor of Information Studies degree. She then embarked on a career in academia, joining the Grenoble Institute of Technology (Grenoble INP) as a University Professor in 1988. Throughout her tenure at Grenoble INP, Plateau has contributed significantly to the institution’s growth and development.
Plateau’s expertise lies in the performance of computer systems, particularly distributed and parallel systems. Her research focuses on queueing models, distributed algorithms, and massively parallel computers. She is widely recognized as an expert in high-speed calculations using massive parallelism.
In addition to her research, Plateau has held various leadership positions within the academic and scientific communities. She has served as the General Administrator of the Grenoble INP cluster since February 2012. Plateau is also the president of the Association of Women Leaders of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation (AFDESRI) since September 2014. Her role in these positions has allowed her to advocate for gender equality and empowerment of women in the academic field.
Plateau’s dedication and accomplishments have not gone unnoticed. She has received numerous awards and distinctions throughout her career. In 2011, she was honored as a Knight of the Legion of Honour, recognizing her outstanding contributions to computer science and academia. In 2012, Plateau received the Grand Prize of the EADS Corporate Foundation (IT) of the French Academy of Sciences. Her significant contributions to the field were further acknowledged in 2015 when she was named an Officer of the National Order of Merit.
Brigitte Plateau continues to be a trailblazer in the field of computer science and a role model for aspiring scientists, especially women. Her dedication, leadership, and groundbreaking research have had a significant impact on the academic community and society as a whole.
