Bolor Ganbold (Mongolian: ; born 1976) is a Mongolian general and a significant figure in Mongolian history. She is best known as the first woman in Mongolian history to be conferred the rank of brigadier general. Ganbold’s groundbreaking achievements in the military have opened doors for women, challenging traditional gender roles and inspiring future generations of female soldiers.
Ganbold was born and raised in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital city. In 1994, she graduated from High School No. 33, marking the beginning of her journey towards a military career. Bolor was part of the first cohort of female recruits admitted into the Military University of Mongolia (now the National Defence University) in the same year. This historic milestone represented a significant shift in the Mongolian Armed Forces, which had traditionally been male-dominated.
In 1999, Bolor proudly graduated from the Military University of Mongolia, becoming one of the first female officers to earn a degree from the institution. Her dedication and perseverance set a strong example for other aspiring women who sought to break barriers in a traditionally male-centric field. Bolor’s commitment to excellence led her to pursue further training at the Air Command and Staff College in Montgomery, Alabama, United States, between 2010 and 2011.
Throughout her military career, Bolor Ganbold has held various positions within the Mongolian Armed Forces. From 1999 to 2003, she served as an electrical engineer, utilizing her technical skills to contribute to the operational effectiveness of the military. Following this, from 2003 to 2007, Bolor worked as a teacher, imparting her knowledge and expertise to a new generation of recruits. In recognition of her capabilities, she was appointed as the head of the Foreign Language Training Centre from 2007 to 2010.
Bolor’s remarkable achievements extend beyond Mongolia’s borders. In 2010, she was selected as part of the United Nations Mission in the Central African Republic and Chad. This deployment marked a significant milestone for Mongolian women, as Bolor became the first female peacekeeper to serve in that specific mission. Her contributions to peacekeeping efforts and her ability to navigate complex international environments garnered further recognition when she served in a leadership role within the United Nations Mission in South Sudan in 2013.
Having garnered substantial experience and expertise in peacekeeping operations, Bolor Ganbold assumed the role of Peacekeeping Affairs Officer within the United Nations Peacekeeping service, based in New York City, from 2015 to 2017. Her dedication to promoting international peace and security exemplifies her commitment to creating a more peaceful and just world.
On 18 March 2022, on Mongolian military day, Bolor Ganbold made history when she was conferred the rank of brigadier general by the President of Mongolia, Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh. This groundbreaking achievement made her the first woman to attain the highest military rank within Mongolia. Her promotion served as a testament to her exceptional leadership skills, expertise, and unwavering commitment to her duties. As of 2022, Bolor holds the esteemed position of heading the Military Training and Education Department of the Mongolian Armed Forces.

In March 2023, she was honored as one of the recipients of that year’s International Women of Courage Awards. This prestigious recognition was bestowed upon Bolor by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and US First Lady Jill Biden, further highlighting her exceptional achievements and inspiring role as a trailblazing woman in the military. Following this, Bolor participated in the International Visitor Leadership Program, further showcasing her leadership and diplomatic skills on an international platform.
