Bakhytzhan Toregozhina (Kazakh: Бақытжан Төреғожина; born 23 March 1962) is a Kazakhstani human rights activist who has dedicated over two decades of her life to campaigning against the violations of fundamental rights in Kazakhstan. Throughout her career, Toregozhina has been a leading voice speaking out on behalf of victims of torture, abuse, and politicized repression.
Born on 23 March 1962, Bakhytzhan Toregozhina is a Kazakhstan national. From an early age, she showed a deep sense of justice and a strong determination to fight for the rights of others. She pursued a career as a human rights activist, focusing on the rule of law and advocating for the rights of victims.
Toregozhina’s activism began in 1999 when she started promoting the development of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Over the years, she has worked on fundraising activities for a network of human rights organizations and peaceful assemblies. She has also served on councils overseeing the status of political prisoners and prisoners of conscience.
One of the notable efforts that Toregozhina has been involved in is the Alyan Tirek, which provides humanitarian and legal assistance to prisoners. Through this initiative, she has been able to support individuals who have been unjustly imprisoned and ensure that their rights are protected.
Toregozhina’s impact extends beyond her work with organizations. She has also organized various youth movements, recognizing the importance of engaging young people in the fight for human rights. In 2004, she initiated Kahar, a popular youth movement that inspired the formation of other similar groups. In 2012, Toregozhina co-founded Sailau, a coalition of NGOs that focused on monitoring elections. She played an instrumental role in the drafting of alternative laws on elections, working towards more transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
Throughout her career, Toregozhina has been a tireless advocate against torture. She has campaigned for the release of political prisoners and has been a leading voice in raising awareness about human rights violations in Kazakhstan. Her dedication and efforts have earned her recognition both nationally and internationally.
On 8 March 2023, Bakhytzhan Toregozhina was honored with the prestigious 2023 International Women of Courage Award. She received this award alongside other nominees at the U.S. Department of State, presented by Jill Biden and Anthony J. Blinken. This recognition underscores the significant impact that Toregozhina has made in the field of human rights and her unwavering commitment to upholding dignity, spirit, and truth.
