Biography:
Wei Tingting (Chinese: 韦婷婷; born 1989) is a Chinese LGBTI+ and feminist activist, writer, and documentary filmmaker. She is one of the Feminist Five. Wei was born in Hechi in the southern region of Guangxi in China.
In 2009, Wei received a LL.B. in sociology from Wuhan University. She continued her education at the same university and in 2011, obtained a LL.M. in anthropology. It was during her time in college that Wei became actively involved in the women’s and LGBT rights movements. She played a crucial role in coordinating and staging productions of The Vagina Monologues in 2007 and 2009. Additionally, she joined the Wuhan Rainbow, an LGBT organization, and served as the director of Ji’ande, an LGBT rights organization in Beijing.
Wei’s dedication to advocacy led her to co-found the National Bisexual Network in China. From 2011 to 2016, she worked as a project manager at the Beijing Gender Health Education Institute. Her time at the institute was focused on raising awareness about gender inequities and sexual diversity. Some of her notable accomplishments include organizing the China AIDS Walk, the first large-scale HIV/AIDS public fundraising project in mainland China, coordinating the Mainstream Media Awards for good LGBT community reporting, and facilitating the annual National LGBT conference in China. Wei also took part in hosting China’s first non-profit LGBT webcast called Queer Comrades and actively participated in women’s conferences in India and South Korea.
After leaving the Beijing Gender Health Education Institute, Wei took on roles as a project manager at the Chinese Lala Alliance from 2012 to 2014 and as a contributor to Les+ Magazine from 2013 to 2014. During this time, she coordinated a project called View Beijing+20 from Lesbian perspective. In 2015, Wei became a coordinator at LGBT Rights Advocacy China, where she worked with victims of LGBT conversion therapies and supported lawsuits against homophobic teaching materials.
From 2016 to 2019, Wei founded and directed the Guangzhou Gender and Sexuality Education Center (GGSEC), a non-governmental organization in Guangzhou, China. The center focuses on conducting gender and sexuality education, training, and advocacy activities. As part of her work, Wei gathered material for the first Chinese documentary film about bisexuality in China called Bi China, which was released in 2017.
In 2018, Wei founded the Guangzhou Nalisha Education Consulting Co., Ltd. The company is dedicated to conducting gender and sexuality research, education, training, and advocacy activities. It offers mental health support and consulting support for victims in the gender and sexuality field to counter discrimination against women and the LGBTI+ community.
Throughout her career, Wei has been a prominent voice in the fight for women’s and LGBT rights in China. Her dedication and efforts have made a significant impact on society, particularly in raising awareness about gender inequities, sexual diversity, and advocating for the rights of marginalized communities.
