Biography:
Vyjayanti Vasanta Mogli is an Indian transgender activist, RTI activist, singer, and motivational speaker. Born and raised in Hyderabad, Vyjayanti had a challenging childhood marked by school abuse, conversion therapy, bullying, and assault. Despite facing these hardships, she emerged as a strong advocate for the rights and dignity of transgender individuals.
Vyjayanti’s journey towards activism began when she intervened in the landmark case of Suresh Kumar Kaushal & Other vs Naz Foundation & Others in the Supreme Court in 2014. Through her affidavit, she highlighted the detrimental effects of conversion or reparative therapy on queer people. Her intervention played a crucial role in raising awareness about the harmful impact of such practices.
Before dedicating herself to activism, Vyjayanti worked in the corporate sector for 17 years and was associated with organizations like TISS, Bhumika, Anveshi, and the Centre for Law and Policy Research in Bangalore. However, her deep commitment to social justice and equality eventually led her to shift her focus entirely to advocacy work.
Vyjayanti is the founder of Telangana Hijra Intersex Transgender Samiti, an LGBT Rights group based in Hyderabad. She has been at the forefront of the battle for the rights and dignity of transgender persons and sexual minorities. Her activism has taken various forms, from filing charge sheets against those who attack trans persons to advocating for stronger policies to protect transgender individuals.
One of Vyjayanti’s central demands is the abolition of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, a draconian law that criminalizes consensual same-sex relationships. As someone who has personally experienced abuse and violation at the hands of the police under this law, she passionately argues for its elimination. She also draws attention to the harmful practices prescribed by village medics and babas, such as rape, as a supposed cure for homosexuality.
Not only does Vyjayanti fight for legal reforms and policy changes, but she also raises awareness about the challenges faced by the transgender community in everyday life. She voices concerns about the discrimination and violence transgender individuals encounter, urging the police to intervene and ensure the safety of the community. In solidarity with the victims of acid attacks targeted towards trans women, she emphasizes the need for a society that embraces and supports all its members.
Vyjayanti’s advocacy work extends beyond her immediate community, as she has been a prominent voice within women’s history in India. She has made significant contributions to the ongoing struggle for gender equality and the full recognition of transgender rights. Her resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to justice make her an inspiring figure for countless individuals in India and beyond.
