Lao Lishi, born on December 12, 1987, in Zhanjiang, Guangdong, is a female diver from the People’s Republic of China. Despite initially stumbling into the sport of diving by mistake, Lao Lishi’s extraordinary talent and determination propelled her to become one of the most celebrated divers in Chinese history.
At the tender age of seven, while accompanying her mother to her brother’s practices, Lao Lishi’s restlessness led her to discover a trampoline. Little did she know that this chance encounter would forever change her life. Zhong Quansheng, the coach of the Chikan Diving School of Amateur Sports Schools, noticed her exceptional coordination and fearless nature, prompting Lishi to officially join the school in 1995.
From the outset, Lao Lishi faced physical challenges, being smaller and thinner than her peers. However, her indomitable spirit and unwavering determination set her apart. In March 1998, she defied the odds and secured a spot on the Guangdong Provincial Diving Team. Her exceptional skills and dedication soon caught the attention of the national team selectors, and in December 2001, she was selected to join the prestigious Chinese National Team, training under the tutelage of Coach Zhang Ting.
Under Coach Zhang’s guidance, Lishi’s performance skyrocketed. In 2002, she made her international debut by winning the 10-meter platform at the FINA Grand Prix circuit in Spain, Canada, and Fort Lauderdale. She continued her winning streak by clinching gold medals at the FINA World Cup and the Asian Games. Returning home, she triumphed at the Chinese National Championship, further cementing her reputation as a formidable diver.
In 2003, Lao Lishi continued her dominance on the international stage. She secured gold medals in Australia and China at the Grand Prix, not only in the 10-meter platform as an individual but also in synchronized diving. Her exceptional skills and consistency earned her gold and silver medals at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona, further solidifying her status as a world-class diver.
However, it was at the pinnacle of Lao Lishi’s career, the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, where she etched her name in history. Teaming up with Li Ting, she captivated the audience and mesmerized the judges, diving their way to an Olympic gold medal in the 10-meter synchronized diving event. Additionally, Lishi clinched a silver medal in the individual 10-meter event, showcasing her versatility and exceptional diving prowess.
