Gyöngyi Likerecz (born 1983 in Oroszlány, Hungary) is a Hungarian female weightlifter. Standing taller than average at 172 cm, Likerecz possesses a strong physique weighing 72 kg. Her flexibility and muscular strength have allowed her to excel in the world of sports. She is affiliated with the Oroszlány City Sports Association (OVSE) and competes in the 75 kg weight class, under the guidance of her coach, János Likerecz Sr.
Likerecz’s journey as a weightlifter began in her adolescence, where she quickly established herself as a force to be reckoned with. In both 1997 and 1998, she secured the title of Adolescent European Champion. Her achievements garnered attention, and her talent continue to flourish as she embarked on her professional career.
The year 2000 marked a significant milestone in Likerecz’s career, as Sydney hosted the XXVII weightlifting tournament at the Summer Olympics. Competing in the 75 kg weight class, Likerecz showcased her skills and determination, finishing an impressive fifth place.
Continuing her streak of success, Likerecz made history for Hungary at the 2001 World Championships in Antalya, Turkey. She became the first Hungarian weightlifter to secure three gold medals, triumphing in the snatch, clean and jerk, and overall categories. Her outstanding performance solidified her place among the world’s best weightlifters.
In 2002, at the World Junior Weightlifting Championships in Havířov, Czech Republic, Likerecz once again made waves. Not only did she replicate her exceptional performance from the previous year, but she also set an adult world record by lifting an astounding 143 kg in the snatch.
Likerecz’s achievements and dedication to her sport have not gone unnoticed, earning her numerous honors and accolades. In 2001, her exceptional results at the World Championships led to her being chosen as the Female Athlete of the Year by the Association of Hungarian Sports Journalists. This marked the first time a female weightlifter received this prestigious award, with the previous recipient being Győző Veres in 1963.
Over the course of her career, Likerecz has amassed an incredible list of accomplishments. These include being an Olympic 5th-place finisher in 2000, a World Champion in 2001, European Champion in 2001, Junior World Champion in 2002, and a three-time Junior World Championship-3rd place finisher (1998, 1999). Likerecz also claimed the title of Junior European Champion in 1999 and won three consecutive titles as European Adolescent Champion in 1997, 1998, and 1999. In the breakout category, she secured the titles of World Champion and European Champion in 2001 and World Champion in the clean and jerk. Furthermore, she was crowned National Champion in 2001.
In recognition of her exceptional accomplishments, Gyöngyi Likerecz was honored with the Silver Cross of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (civil section). This prestigious award was bestowed upon her by the President of the Republic of Hungary, Ferenc Mádl, at the proposal of the Minister of Children, Youth, and Sports.
