Biography:
Anne Sophie Mathis is a French former professional boxer, born on July 23, 1977. Her boxing career spanned from 1995 to 2016, during which she achieved remarkable success and made a lasting impact on the sport. Mathis held world titles in two weight divisions and is widely regarded as one of the biggest punchers in the history of women’s boxing.
Mathis first rose to prominence on December 2, 2006, when she defeated her compatriot Myriam Lamare at Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, becoming the women’s WBA super Lightweight Champion. She successfully defended her title against Lamare on June 29, 2007, solidifying her status as a dominant force in her weight class.
However, it was her victory over Holly Holm on December 2, 2011, that truly propelled Mathis into the spotlight. In a hard-fought bout, Mathis delivered a devastating knockout to Holm in the seventh round, showcasing her exceptional power and ability. This win against Holm elevated Mathis to new heights in the boxing world.
Despite her impressive win over Holm, Mathis faced defeat in their rematch on June 15, 2012. Holm claimed a unanimous decision victory, and Mathis relinquished her championship belts. Undeterred, Mathis sought to capture the WBA, WBC, and WBO championship belts in a fight against Cecilia Brækhus on September 22, 2012. Unfortunately, she fell short in her quest for undisputed welterweight glory.
In June 2013, Mathis rebounded by winning the vacant WBF Super Welterweight title. In a bout against Yahaira Hernandez, Mathis showcased her power once again, securing a fifth-round TKO victory. However, controversy marred her next title defense. On July 26, 2014, Mathis faced Christina Hammer, putting her WBF title on the line while vying for the vacant WBO Super Welterweight title. The fight ended in a controversial disqualification of Mathis, although many argued that she was unjustly denied a knockout victory. The decision was later overturned to a No Contest, emphasizing the contentious nature of the bout.
Throughout her career, Mathis also dabbled in Muay Thai, demonstrating her versatility and willingness to explore different combat sports. Her dedication and tenacity inside the ring have made her an influential figure in the world of women’s boxing.
Known for her exceptional punching power, Mathis has left an indelible mark on women’s boxing. Her victory over Holly Holm stands as a testament to her skill and determination.
