Biography:
Fatumah Ahmed was a major general in the Kenya Air Force who played a significant role in breaking barriers for women in the military. Born in 1965, Ahmed had an unexpected entry into the military. After completing her secondary school education in 1983, she had to return to her hometown to obtain an identification card. It was during this time that she stumbled upon a recruitment campaign being conducted by the Kenyan Army near the offices of the ID services. Intrigued by the opportunity, she made inquiries and decided to join.
In 1984, Ahmed entered the prestigious Kenya Military Academy as an officer cadet. She excelled in her training and upon graduation, was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Kenyan Women Service Corps. From 1985 onwards, she served alongside the Kenyan Air Force, primarily in human resources roles. During this time, she developed a reputation for her dedication, professionalism, and leadership abilities.
Ahmed’s commitment to professional development is evident in her educational achievements. She holds a degree from the National Defence College and the Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies. Additionally, she has a diploma in management from Strathmore University. These qualifications, along with her practical experience, allowed her to excel in her roles within the air force.
In 1999, the Women Service Corps was dissolved, and its members were integrated into the remaining branches of the Kenyan armed forces. Ahmed seized this opportunity and transferred to the Kenyan Air Force. This transition also allowed her to break free from the limitations placed on members of the Women Service Corps, such as restrictions on marriage and pregnancy. Ahmed went on to have three children, demonstrating that women can balance family life with a successful military career.
Throughout her career, Ahmed held various positions of increasing responsibility. She served as the deputy commander of a battalion and later assumed the role of head of personnel at the Kenyan Air Force headquarters. Her leadership skills and competence were recognized, and on 10th August 2015, she was promoted to the rank of brigadier. This promotion was groundbreaking, as Ahmed became the first female brigadier in Kenya.
Ahmed’s promotion to major general on 13th July 2018 was another historic milestone, as she became the first woman in the Kenya Defence Forces to hold that rank. Her success shattered gender norms and opened doors for future generations of women in the military. With her groundbreaking achievements, Ahmed has paved the way for more women to rise through the ranks and contribute to the defense and security of Kenya.
